Cleaning Antique Brass Without Destroying Patina

Conservative cleaning techniques that protect value.

Over-polishing destroys more antique value than dirt ever does.

Identify the finish first

Lacquered brass, unlacquered brass and brass-plated steel all behave differently. A magnet tells you quickly whether you are dealing with plate over steel — in which case aggressive polishing will go straight through the plating.

Conservative approach

  • Start with a dry microfibre cloth.
  • Move to warm water with a drop of mild detergent.
  • Dry completely and immediately.
  • Use metal polish only on unlacquered brass you genuinely want brightened.

When to leave it alone

Even patina on a documented antique is usually worth keeping. If you are unsure, ask before you polish — it cannot be undone.
