Repair or Replace? Making the Call on an Old Lamp

How value, availability of parts and safety factor into the decision.

Repair or Replace? Making the Call on an Old Lamp illustration

Three questions settle almost every case.

1. Is the body worth keeping?

Solid brass, ceramic, marble, art glass and quality mid-century pieces are nearly always worth rewiring. Hollow pot metal and glued plastic assemblies often are not.

2. Are parts available?

Sockets, harps and cord are universal. Unique glass shades, cast arms and proprietary switches can be the deciding factor.

3. What is the total cost?

If a repair reaches most of the price of an equivalent new fixture and the piece has no sentimental or antique value, replacement is the honest recommendation — and we will make it.
