Lamp Cord Types Explained: SPT-1, SPT-2 and Cloth Covered
What the cord markings mean and which cord suits which fixture.
Cord choice affects safety, appearance and how long the repair lasts.
SPT-1 and SPT-2
SPT-1 has thinner insulation and suits most table lamps. SPT-2 is thicker, tougher and better for floor lamps, anything that gets moved often, or fixtures drawing more current.
Cloth-covered cord
Modern cloth-covered cord uses proper PVC conductors under a woven jacket, so you get period looks with current safety. It is the right choice for antique restorations where a glossy plastic cord would look wrong.
Colour and length
We keep brown, black, white, gold, and several twisted cloth options in stock. Longer is not always better — excess cord on the floor is a trip hazard and invites damage.
